The qualification looks at fire safety and can be applied in many sectors. On completion of the qualification, your learners will be able to:
- justify fire safety improvements using moral and financial arguments
- advise how fires and explosions can occur and the appropriate controls to minimize fire and explosion risks;
- advise their employer on the requirements for the fire protection of premises and workers including the appropriate training obligations;
- carry out a fire risk assessment in their own workplace – prioritizing risks, inspecting the workplace, recognizing a range of common fire hazards, evaluating risks (taking account of current controls), recommending further control measures, and planning actions.
The Fire Safety Certificate (FSC) replaces the National Certificate in Fire Safety and Risk Management (NFC), which was launched in 2006, and the International Certificate in Fire Safety and Risk Management (IFC), that as launched in 2012. Both the NFC and IFC are recognized around the world

- Managing Fire Safety
- Principles of Fire and Explosion• Fuel, oxygen, ignition sources, and control measures
- Fire protection of buildings
- Safety of people in the event of a fire
- Fire Safety Risk Assessment
ASSESSMENT
This qualification has a two-step assessment process which consists of
- An open book examination: you will be able to complete this at home or in another safe and suitable location where you can concentrate. You will be presented with a scenario that describes a realistic workplace and situation. You will then be asked to carry out a series of tasks using evidence presented in the scenario as well as the underpinning knowledge you have gained through your studies and revision. You will have 24 hours to complete and submit your paper – though you should be able to complete it in 4-5 hours.
A practical fire risk assessment: the fire risk assessment has been developed around fire risks assessment standards such as the Home Office fire guidance and PAS79-1:2020. The time needed to complete the fire risk assessment is not restricted. We do, however, recommend that you take around three hours to complete all four parts of the assessment.
Both assessments will be marked by an external examiner appointed by NEBOSH
